City University of Hong Kong
The Systematic Urban Management Lab at City University of Hong Kong focuses on developing innovative, data-driven approaches to address contemporary urban challenges.
SUM Lab investigates the dynamic interplay between urban populations and their environments to advance sustainable and intelligent city development. Through interdisciplinary research integrating urban science, digital technology, and systems engineering, we employ cutting-edge approaches, digital twins, dynamic urban modelling, and multi-source data analytics, to understand how human activities and urban systems mutually shape each other, supporting evidence-based urban decision-making and policy innovation.
Organised by Dr. Qian-Cheng Wang, our interdisciplinary team works at the intersection of architecture, civil engineering, computer science, and environmental studies to shape the future of urban living.
Presidential Assistant Professor
Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, CityU
Dr Qian-Cheng Wang joined City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in 2025 under the Presidential Assistant Professors Scheme. He holds a PhD in Land Economy and an MPhil in Architecture and Urban Studies from the University of Cambridge, as well as a First-Class Honours BSc in Building Engineering and Management from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Dr Wang is the founder and director of the Systematic Urban Management (SUM) Laboratory at CityU. His research leverages digital twin technologies to enhance decision-making in smart cities, with a particular focus on dynamic urban environmental and health modelling. His team also explores human-centred approaches to integrating heterogeneous data, aiming to advance sustainable urban and regional development.
In addition to his research, Dr Wang is actively engaged in academic service. He currently serves as Associate Programme Leader of the BSc (Architecture and Surveying) at CityU and is an Associate Editor for Environment and Behavior and Computational Urban Science. He also serves on the committees of several international conferences, including ICCREM and DigiTwin, and reviews for over 30 leading international journals.
